Meet the Staff

I'm pink, therefore I'm Ham.

#1
Although expensive, tuition, room and board only cover about 78% of the total cost of your education! With the help of loyal supporters, WC is able to cover the other 22%!

#2
The 1782 Society is WC’s premier giving recognition society for donors who support WC at a leadership level. Be on the lookout! Some of the local members use WC’s athletic facilities. Don’t be afraid to say “Hi” and “Thanks!”

#3
Gifts to The Washington Fund help keep down the cost of tuition. Without the help of donors who support this worthy cause, Washington College tuition would be 22% higher!

#4
Alumni, students, faculty & staff who give back to WC send a strong message to external reviewers and potential applicants that Washington College is a worthy investment. High participation can also increase WC’s national rank!

#5
George Washington was a philanthropist! He famously donated 50 guineas to The College at Chester in 1794. Dr. William Smith, founder of Washington College, named the College in his honor.

#6
Students help raise money for WC! The Phonathon is a group of student callers who reach out to alumni, parents, and friends to share the latest news on campus, update information, and ask for a contribution to The Washington Fund.

#7
Through The Washington Fund, donors support Washington College’s top priorities: student scholarships, faculty support & campus beautification. This year’s goal is $1.4 million.

#8
Class gifts aren’t just for graduating seniors! Alumni who come back to WC for their Reunions commemorate their return with a class gift, too. This year’s 30th reunion, for example, is sponsoring student scholarships!

#9
Hamilton Pig piggy banks symbolize the importance of giving back. If you have a Ham, fill him with those spare coins! All donations support The Washington Fund. It doesn’t take much: “A little change can make a PIG difference!”

#10
President Reiss holds a trophy race for alumni each year to encourage their support for WC. Each class competes for the highest total gift and the highest total participation to have their name etched on a trophy and earn some serious bragging rights.

Who is Hamilton Pig?

Named for Alexander Hamilton (the first United States Secretary of the Treasury, a loyal supporter of George Washington, and that distinguished face on your $10 bills), Hamilton Pig—or “Ham” for short—is a piggy bank that symbolizes the importance of giving back.

This year, each member of the class of 2015 will receive his or her very own Hamilton. The goal: investing in some good karma and paying it forward.

It’s simple. Students proudly display Ham and remember to fill him with any spare change. Throughout the year they can attend Round Ups (i.e. themed parties) where they’ll have the opportunity to donate their savings while having a “squealing” good time!

Who Gives?

Washington College thrives because generous people invest in it.

  • Did you know that 75% of the student body receives financial aid?
  • Did you know that it actually costs $66,814 to educate a student at Washington College, but tuition and fees are $46,770? With the help of loyal supporters, Washington College is able to cover every student’s remaining $20,044!

Since the 16th century, the piggy bank has been used throughout the world as a tool to teach the value of saving and mindful spending. Typical college students might budget for weekly lattes from Java George, or put aside cash for that spring break trip to Fiji, but what about saving to give something back to their alma mater?

  • How Much?

The simple truth is that every penny counts. Any donation to Washington College, regardless of size, is a vote of confidence in the institution and its mission. Even the equivalent of one gourmet cup of coffee (that’s about $5 for those who aren’t coffee fiends) makes a huge impact. And what do most college students have? A few coins here and there, languishing at the bottom of pockets, junk drawers and couch cushions.

    Feed the Future

George Washington gave his time and money to lead our country to economic and political freedom; yet he still prioritized giving back to those causes he valued. He famously donated fifty guineas to support the College at Chester—Washington College—and today it bears his name and legacy. Imagine what’s possible if everyone would give just a few coins. In the end, it all goes back to the students. Donations support The Washington Fund, and The Washington Fund puts that money toward top priorities like scholarships. With a little help, Washington College can continue to provide quality education today and for generations to come. It doesn’t take much. A little change can make a “PIG” difference!
