Beth Herman has worked in educational advancement for 22 years, specializing in major gifts solicitation, campaigns, Board development, staff and volunteer management, and annual giving.
Since her arrival at WC in 2005, she has recruited new leaders for major and planned gifts, advancement services, and alumni relations; increased staff visits to donors and alumni; and helped design a national alumni program. She and her staff are assisting President Tipson to complete an $8 million campaign to renovate Gibson Performing Arts and prepare for a $100 million+ comprehensive campaign.
Prior to joining Washington College she was Vice President for College Advancement at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, PA, where she managed 40 development, alumni relations, and communications staff and launched successful campaigns for a science center and a Writers House.
From 1993 to 2003, Herman served as Director of Development and then Associate VP for Development at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, WA. She planned and managed the Charting the Future Campaign, raising $68.5m (137% of goal). Herman and her team more than doubled total giving—from an average of $5.6m/ year (FY93-95) to $12.1m/ year (FY99-01).
Before Puget Sound, Herman served as Director of Development for the University of Washington's College of Forest Resources and Center for Urban Horticulture (1990-93); Director of Annual Giving at the University of Redlands (1986-1990); and Communications/ Annual Fund Director at Charles Wright Academy (1985-86).
Herman served on the faculty of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) Summer Institute in Educational Fundraising in 2002 and 2003. In 2001 she received CASE's Steuben Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching, awarded to faculty members rated as stellar speakers for at least 10 different national conferences. She is also a published author with award-winning essays placed in Equus magazine and Flying Changes, the Pacific Northwest sport horse magazine.
